Santa’s Secret from David’s Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  David’s Tea

Product Description:

Ever wonder how Santa manages to deliver all those presents in just one night? Well here’s the hush-hush formula. He uses a special combination of Chinese black tea, peppermint leaves and spices – all sprinkled with real little candy canes. It’s both energizing and remarkably soothing. All Santa needs is one cup and his motto changes from “ho ho ho” to “go go go”.

Taster’s Review:

Every year I try to tell my family that Santa would prefer tea instead of milk with the cookies we sit out for the jolly old elf.  They don’t believe me, but maybe this tea will convince them!

My first reaction – my first sip – was CANDY CANE!  It was sweet, minty and delicious.  Now that I’ve taken a few sips, it tastes a little less like candy cane (although that taste is still there), and more like a black tea that has been flavored with candy cane.  The mint flavor is just right – it doesn’t taste overly minty.  It tastes crisp and fresh and exhilarating with a sweetness that is not too sweet.  Perfect for dipping your favorite Christmas cookies!

The black tea base is strong without being overly aggressive.  It seems to be in perfect harmony with the mint flavor.  It is a very well-balanced cup.

I find this to be delightful as a hot tea and that’s just what I want this time of year.  It has a refreshingly sweet taste that requires no additions, although it might be nice with a splash of milk.

Yep, I think Santa would be a very JOLLY old elf indeed if you surprised him with a cup of this tea instead of a glass of milk!

Over Achieve Mint from Teaquilibrium

Tea Information:

Leaf Type: Yerba Maté

Where to Buy:  Teaquilibrium

Product Description:

Getting ready for race season or simply want to add some calm pep to your day?

The mouthwatering combination of chocolate and fresh mint has made Achieve Mint a customer favorite.  Overachieve Mint is blended with energizing Yerba Mate to give that sustained boost that mate is known for. This is a fabulous choice for endurance athletes or anyone who wants a natural calm energy.

ingredients: yerba mate, peppermint, cacao nibs, natural chocolate flavor.

Taster’s Review:

This is a really tasty Yerba Maté blend.  The mint is strong but the chocolate does come through nicely.

The Yerba Maté base is a green (not roasted) Maté and offers a hint of its earthy, vegetative flavor.  However, the mint flavor is rather intense here, and it does seem to mask some of the stronger notes of the Yerba Maté.  But, I’m not complaining because I sometimes find the rather distinct flavor of Maté to be a bit too much for me.  With this blend, it’s really quite enjoyable and melds very well with the other flavors.

The peppermint is very strong – this blend is certainly not for those who do not care for mint.  For those of us who do, though, this is a clean, crisp tasting peppermint that invigorates while leaving the palate feeling refreshed.

The chocolate is a bit subtle, but, I am liking how it comes through.  I can really notice the cocoa notes in the aftertaste mingling with the minty flavor.  I also found that the chocolate seems to pop a bit more as the tisane cools, so don’t drink this one piping hot!  Let it cool just a little so that you can enjoy the chocolate flavors!

This tisane reminds me of a peppermint patty (especially the aftertaste), but without the overwhelming sugary sweetness!  A thin layer of chocolate coating … just enough to coat the peppermint but not overpower it … a snappy, vibrant treat that will surely get you going!

I like this one a lot!

Green Peace from Chad’s Chai & Tea Co.

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Chad’s Chai & Tea

Product Description:

The Moroccans liked to blend green tea with mint, and we couldn’t agree more wholeheartedly! Refreshing and calming, Green Peace is an inspired blend of extraordinary green tea and spearmint leaf. It can be enjoyed by itself or with food, and simply must be tried iced!

Taster’s Review:

I tried this before knowing anything about it except for its name.  I could smell the mint, although it was not overwhelming.  When I tasted it, I could taste the mint, but, it didn’t taste like a typical “Moroccan Mint” to me… it tasted like there was something a little different.

And there is!  Where many mint green teas settle for either peppermint or spearmint, Chad’s Chai & Tea chose to use both mints to create a real depth of flavor.  But even with two different types of mint, the mint flavor is not overwhelming here, and I am able to taste the Chinese green tea.

Although the website for Chad’s Chai & Tea does not specify what type of Chinese green tea is used for this blend, it looks like a gunpowder green tea.  The tea has a light, creamy butter taste in the background which when combined with the minty flavors, comes across as a very creamy mint taste.  Delicious!

This tea tastes invigorating, but there is a certain soothing property to it as well.  I feel more relaxed as I continue to sip it.

With mint teas, sometimes they are just too MINTY… but, this one is just right.  A nice balance between green tea and mint flavors, and I like the blending of the two types of mint.  A very pleasant mint green tea!

Taster’s Review:

I love licorice and I like peppermint, but I don’t always like the two flavors together.  Sometimes it works for me while others it does not.  With this tisane, it works very nicely!

The rooibos base offers a hint of nutty/woody flavor, but, it iss barely distinguishable  in the midst of the stronger flavors of licorice, fennel and peppermint.  The lemon verbena is a soft citrus-y flavor that sits in the background and softens some of the sharper qualities of the other ingredients.

The licorice, fennel and peppermint are the dominant flavors here, but as I said before the lemon verbena softens them somewhat, making this combination very palatable.  It starts off with a sweet licorice-y taste, followed by the taste of crisp peppermint.  The bright, lemony note arrives right before the finish and leaves a cool minty/citrus-y aftertaste.

I like this best when served hot with a drizzle of agave nectar, but it’s not bad iced either.  This is a tasty, soothing and very relaxing tisane.  Nice!

Organic Peppermint from Byron Bay Tea Company

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Herbal

Where to Buy:  Byron Bay Tea Company

Product Description:

A fresh, minty tea that is both cooling and invigorating. Enjoy any time of the day.

Taster’s Review:

This is about as simple as it gets, folks.  It’s 100% pure, 100% organic peppermint leaf.  Nothing else.  It really can’t get any simpler than that, can it?

Sipping Peppermint tea is a delicious way to relax after a meal.  What I like best about pure peppermint tea like this one from Byron Bay is that even though it tastes crisp and refreshing – somehow, it doesn’t end up tasting like medicine-y mouthwash.  It is (obviously!) minty fresh and herbaceous, but it doesn’t taste medicinal.  It tastes natural – because that’s what it is.

It is especially nice after eating something spicy, because it helps to cool the palate and leave it feeling clean!  Peppermint is one of my favorite restorative herbs – I feel refreshed after I sip it, but because it is naturally caffeine free, I don’t feel too stimulated by drinking it.  It is invigorating yet soothing!  Nice!

Yerba Maté Mint from Choice Organic Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type: Yerba Maté

Where to Buy:  Choice Organic Teas

Product Description:

Perk up with this refreshing twist on the traditional. Renowned for its natural kick, yerba maté grows in subtropical South America and has been enjoyed by gauchos for generations. We blend ours with peppermint, spearmint and a hint of lemongrass for a bright tea that’s light, cool and exhilarating. [contains caffeine]

Taster’s Review:

Exhilarating is right!  The yerba maté is energizing, while the peppermint and spearmint is crisp and refreshing.  Put these ingredients together and you’ve got one very exhilarating beverage, indeed!

This tisane is nicely balanced.  It is minty, but not too minty.  The yerba maté is slightly earthy but the mint offsets it enough so that it is easy to drink and not too earthy or vegetative.  The lemongrass offers just a hint of citrus tones to the cup and adds an interesting dimension to the cup.  There’s even a light tangy note from the citrus right at the finish that remains in the aftertaste.

And I really like the company.  It is one that I really feel good about supporting, because not only are they organic and committed to the protection of our environment, but they also are involved with really good causes, such as the Jane Goodall Institute, a non-profit organization that is committed to the preservation of the lives and habitat of primates.

It is a very good tea and a tea I can feel good about!

Taster’s Review:

This is a delicious treat.  It tastes like mint chocolate chip ice cream!  YUM!

The mint is the strongest flavor in this cup but it is not so strong that it infringes upon the chocolate.  The two flavors seem perfectly willing to play nicely together.  The chocolate is rich and gives the cup a creamy flavor that smooths out some of the crisp minty tones.  The rooibos flavor imparts very little flavor to the cup – just a hint of nutty notes here – but I’m not complaining.

The overall flavor is sweet making this an ideal choice as a dessert substitution.  Imagine getting all the delicious flavor of a chocolate-y mint without the calories!  This tea makes that possible!

Bravo, Teaquilibrium! What an Achieve-Mint!
