Organic Dragons Well from Bird Pick Tea & Herb

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Bird Pick Tea & Herb

Product Description:

Dragon’s Well Green Tea originates from the mountains surrounding West Lake in the Zhejiang province of China. Today, this tea remains a specialty of this region. The name was given according to legend of a dragon that lived in a well near West Lake Village. It is said that it saved the village from a long drought by bringing rain. The tea has a unique appearance of smooth, flat green leaves with pointed ends – resembling that of a sparrow’s tongue.

Taster’s Review:

An excellent Dragons Well tea!

The tea is crisp and light-bodied and yet full of flavor.  It is grassy/vegetative but there is also a pleasant fruit-like flavor in the forefront that mingles deliciously with the vegetative quality.

The sip approaches the palate with a sweet, almost creamy taste.  The fruit flavor then presents itself, and it is somewhat citrus-y.  A grassy undercurrent is present throughout the sip while the taste of lightly buttered vegetables weave in and out.  The sip finishes with a light astringency with a nutty aftertaste.

I brewed this in my gaiwan and it produced four delightful infusions that way.  It is a very mild tea, one that is very enjoyable later in the afternoon when a black tea might seem too heavy.  A nice way to unwind!

Bird Pick Tea & Herb comes through with yet another high quality, delicious tea!  I’m really impressed with this company.

Taster’s Review:

I love freshly baked scones, and because of that I’ve tried a LOT of scone mixes over the years.  But, I can honestly say that I’ve not tried one as delicious as this!

These scones are amazing!

They are simple enough to prepare – just measure out the right amount of mix (two batches can be made from 1 package), and add butter, cream, egg and vanilla.  This results in a dense moist scone that is flaky and tender and delicious.  The best way I can think of to describe these scones is that if my beloved gramma made her pie crust into scones – this is what they would taste like!

Not only are these scones delicious, but they are probably the most economical scones mix I’ve found in a long time!   Each package makes 2 batches of 10 – 12 scones (depending upon how large you make your scones) and costs just $5.75 – which is what I’ve found to be about the average cost of a typical ONE batch scone mix.  In fact, I’ve found (and paid for!) scone mixes that cost even more for jut one batch.  This package gives you double the product for just about the same price.

Generally, I like my scones with clotted cream (or, in a pinch, some butter will do), however, the butter added during preparations give these tea-time treats a very buttery-rich flavor; I don’t think they need more!  But some lemon curd (or fruit spread) would be nice.  (Heavenly Tea Gatherings also offers a delicious lemon curd that I shall be reviewing very soon!)

Serve these scones at your next tea party and your guests will be begging you for the recipe!  Nobody has to know that it came from a mix!  YUMMY!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Original Matcha Latte from Matcha Mountains

Where to Buy:  Where Matcha Mountains Products Are Sold.

Product Description:

Our original mix is ideal for getting you going in the morning or as an afternoon “pick me up”. Our original mix is for people who like the taste of green tea, although a few drops of vanilla extract or syrup is great. Simply mix with hot water and add your favourite frothed milk product. This product has the highest portion of matcha per serving and has a thick creamy texture.

Taster’s Review:

Yum!

I love Matcha and have been drinking it for years (although I will say that in the last year or two I have been drinking more than I had in the previous years), but I must admit that Matcha Latte drinks are a bit new to me, having only tried my first Matcha Latte in the last year or so.  But, since that time, I’ve been hooked!

This Matcha Latte mix has a sweetness to it, but it isn’t too sweet nor does it overwhelm the natural flavor of the green tea.  I can taste the distinct bittersweet taste of the Matcha, which I really enjoy.  This is incredibly creamy and energizing.

I love that this product is organic, and I also like that I can choose just how creamy I want this Matcha Latte to be by choosing my own milk – I can go with skim milk for less creaminess or I can really go for it and use half & half for an out of this world creamy experience.  Or if I prefer a non-dairy option, I can use almond milk or rice milk, or even coconut milk!

This is a versatile, delicious treat!   This product may be a little difficult to find since Matcha Mountains does not seem to sell it retail, however, it appears that it is sold in various Cafes and it is well worth the effort to find this latte mix because it’s outstanding!

Product Description:

Awaken your senses with this rare tea, rich in flavor and history, from ancient tea trees growing deep in the forests of Southeast Asia. Generations of local people have climbed these wild tea trees to pluck their leaves. Now you can enjoy this refreshing cup that’s smooth, yet hearty. Drink in its enduring energy.

Taster’s Review:

Robust!  This tea has got real spirit to it – and the strength to enliven even the sleepiest of sleepy-heads!

The aroma is inviting.  It has a warm, wake-up kind of smell to it – if that makes sense!  Almost a baked kind of fragrance that translates into the flavor. It’s the kind of scent you WANT to wake up to!

The flavor is equally as warm and inviting.  As I said in the previous paragraph, there is a bake-y kind of flavor to it that rests in the background and beckons my palate to keep sipping so that it can savor that delicious flavor.  It is a bold tea – very strong – with a nice malty flavor to it.   It reminds me very much of an Assam!  But there is also an intriguing, fruity wine-like note in the distance that is reminiscent of a Keemun tea too.

It is a tasty tea that offers a very pleasant wake-up call!

Wild Forest Black tea is also one of five new teas from Choice Organic Teas that have been created to help support the Jane Goodall Institute.  Hmm… great tea and a good cause …  I like it when a tea can accomplish so much!

Organic Peppermint from Byron Bay Tea Company

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Herbal

Where to Buy:  Byron Bay Tea Company

Product Description:

A fresh, minty tea that is both cooling and invigorating. Enjoy any time of the day.

Taster’s Review:

This is about as simple as it gets, folks.  It’s 100% pure, 100% organic peppermint leaf.  Nothing else.  It really can’t get any simpler than that, can it?

Sipping Peppermint tea is a delicious way to relax after a meal.  What I like best about pure peppermint tea like this one from Byron Bay is that even though it tastes crisp and refreshing – somehow, it doesn’t end up tasting like medicine-y mouthwash.  It is (obviously!) minty fresh and herbaceous, but it doesn’t taste medicinal.  It tastes natural – because that’s what it is.

It is especially nice after eating something spicy, because it helps to cool the palate and leave it feeling clean!  Peppermint is one of my favorite restorative herbs – I feel refreshed after I sip it, but because it is naturally caffeine free, I don’t feel too stimulated by drinking it.  It is invigorating yet soothing!  Nice!

Spice with Green Tea from Chai-Wallah’s

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Chai-Wallah’s

Product Description:

A blend of our organic chai spice and Fair Trade Organic Green Tea from Korakundah Estate in Nilgiri, South India . Korakundah was the first certified organic Nilgiri tea estate. Established in 1922, the garden has become one of India’s premier organic tea estates. Tigers, panthers and elephant herds are spotted regularly in the dense jungle surrounding the pristine garden. This chai is smooth and mellow unlike its Assam stablemate! The chai should not be boiled or simmered but steeped otherwise it will reduce the beneficial properties of the tea.

Taster’s Review:

Mmm!  This is GOOD!  The spice is strong and zesty!   The pepper and ginger are the most prominent of the spices, but, they do not overpower the balance of spicy tastes.

The green tea base is a bit lighter in flavor than you’d experience with a black tea chai, but then, that’s to be expected.  It has a fresh, lightly vegetative taste to it, and I think that the tea is nicely complimented in this blend of vibrant spices.

I have tried this chai a couple of times now.  The first time, I tasted it without milk and I liked it a lot that way.  The spices were very lively.  The second time, I decided to go latte, and it is also very good as a latte.  The spices are muted a little by the milk, but the peppery kick can still be tasted.  The green tea’s vegetative qualities are enhanced a little by the addition of milk, which I found interesting.

Both ways are tasty, but I do think I prefer it non-latte, just because more of the spices are highlighted that way.  Which ever way you choose to serve it, this is a chai I would highly recommend to those who enjoy spicy chai teas!  It’s yummy and makes me happy!  And the fact that it’s 100% Organic and Fair Trade – well that’s something to really smile about!

Grand Earl Grey from mhai diva

Tea Type: Black Tea

Where To Buy: mhai diva

Product Description:

Black Tea and Bergamot

More About Mhaidiva:

Mhaidiva, the Lady of Tea, is the personification of everything that makes life worth living. She is the muse giving everyone who drinks her tea the gift of beauty, health, peace, harmony and creative thinking. She speaks to you in haiku, seventeen syllable poems written in three lines of 5-7-5. She shares philosophy, or lessons of life, expressed in one breath. She uses images of tea, evoking a mysterious solitude and meditative presence with romantic images of austere beauty.

The symbol for Mhaidiva is derived from the letters “Aaw” and is created from the gesture of “opening lips invitingly”. An obvious choice for the design of our Mhaidiva logo.

Tasters Review:

I recently discovered mhai diva.  I am very impressed with their dedication to Fair Trade and Sustainability.   I will touch more on that after writing a bit more about this tea.

I was super excited to receive a box full of boxed teas from The Netherlands not too long ago.  Inside was this nifty little number.  It’s mhai diva’s Grand Earl Grey.  It’s a nice bagged Earl Grey.  The Black Tea is strong but the Bergamot isn’t overly strong.  It doesn’t taste like it’s in a bag!  And I like that!  This is a flavorful and convenient EG.

As I mentioned above – mhai diva – is both Fair Trade and Organic.

Mhaidiva is proud to present a range of both Fairtrade and Organic certified tea. The premium quality tea is sustainable and for this reason selected and produced with respect for people and the planet.

The various tea blends originate from the highlands of Sri Lanka (Ceylon) and the rooibos tea is from South Africa. The teas are packed in environmental-friendly envelopes. They are available in boxes of 100 pieces.

We flavoured the tea with only natural, liquid flavours to establish a maximum tea-tasting pleasure.

View our Fairtrade and Organic certified tea assortment here.

99% of the Mhaidiva tea is picked by women at the tea plantations, the women control the picking of the tea leafs with the fingertips in perfection. Mhaidiva is made by 100% Orthodox picked tea, qualitative the best way of picking.
