Keemun Finest Chuen Cha from Butiki Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  Butiki Teas

Product Description:

Grown near the Huang Shan mountains in the southern Anhui Province, Keemun in China, this tea is a relatively strong. Subtle notes of cocoa, leather, dried plum and wet earth can be noted.

Taster’s Review:

This is one bold, stimulating cuppa!  If I wasn’t awake before I started sipping, I’d be awake now!

My first reaction to the taste of this tea is “wow!  Smoky.”  But as I continue to sip, I realize that it is less “smoky” than it is almost charcoal-esque.  Not that it tastes as though I’ve steeped some of charcoal briquettes or anything, but it has that sort of essence about it.

It is a very earthy and masculine tasting tea, but underneath these assertive flavors is a wonderful sweetness.   A molasses-y sweetness!  I also get the flavors as described in the product description above.  I taste notes of a savory cocoa, a rustic leather, sweet dried plum and damp earth.

Together, it becomes a deliciously complex cup of tea.  At first reaction, I was a bit uncertain about this tea, but now, as I am finishing the cup, I am realizing just how good this really is.  It’s good for multiple infusions too!

This tea is powerful stuff!

Yunnan Royal Golden from Butiki Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  Butiki Teas

Product Description:

The golden tips of this black tea produce a complex peppery mellow yet malty flavor. This full-bodied tea originates from China.

Taster’s Review:

The dry leaves are really beautiful.  The picture provided doesn’t do them justice, they really are GOLDEN.  But that’s nothing – just wait until you taste the tea that these golden leaves produce!

As I mentioned on Steepster, the aroma of this tea evokes images of freshly baked bread.  It doesn’t smell like baked bread, exactly, but the aroma has a way of bringing to mind the cozy comfort of a freshly baked loaf of bread.

The flavor is sublime!  It has a rich biscuit-y kind of quality to it.  Chewy with a pleasing malty character.  The flavor is hefty!  This is the kind of black tea you want first thing in the morning!  It has GUSTO!  In the background, notes of fruit can be detected, with a forefront of delicate spice notes that hint of pepper.  The finish is somewhat astringent (although it isn’t overwhelming), leaving the palate feeling refreshed.

While this IS delicious as an iced tea, it is one that I recommend serving hot, because I think that the flavor of this tea is best experienced when hot.  It has a mild sweetness to it, so do taste it before you sweeten.  I found it to be quite delightful without sweetener but a tiny drizzle of honey won’t hurt it either.

Truly a remarkable Yunnan!

Classic Earl Grey from Butiki Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Black

Where to Buy:  Butiki Teas

Product Description:

Classic Earl Grey is blended with Chinese, Indian, and Sri Lankan teas and is enhanced with a touch of natural bergamot oil. The character is distinct with a citrus flavor.

Taster’s Review:

This is a very well-crafted Earl Grey!

It is not often that I come across an Earl Grey that is as well balanced as this one.  The flavor of the bergamot is strong – but the black tea is just as strong and the two compliment each other well without competing with one another.

The black tea base is brisk and bold.  It is a toothsome black tea with a deep, complex flavor.  There are notes of malt and even some distant spice notes in there!  There is a light astringency to this – lighter in astringency than I ordinarily experience with a citrus flavored tea – and no bitterness.  A very delicious blend of black teas!

The bergamot is fragrant and crisp.  Citrus-y tart but also pleasantly sweet.  This has very few floral notes to it – the bergamot here prefers to exhibit its citrus tones rather than its flowery qualities which is perfectly fine with me.  It has a clean, authentic taste to it.  It doesn’t come across as perfume-ish.  Just delicious.

This is an Earl Grey that would work nicely as a hot or iced tea, although I generally prefer my Earl Grey teas hot … with just a tiny drizzle of honey, if you please!  I don’t usually add milk to my Earl Grey so I didn’t here, but it should take it very well if you prefer Earl Grey with milk.  A good “anytime” tea, this Classic Earl Grey from Butiki!

Ginger Rooibos from Butiki Teas

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Rooibos

Where to Buy:  Butiki Teas

Product Description:

Ginger Rooibos is a smooth and spicy tisane that originates from South Africa. The light ginger flavor of this tisane finishes sweet and smooth. Rooibos is naturally decaffeinated.

Taster’s Review:

I chose this as an upset stomach remedy this evening, and it seems to be working.  And it tastes really good!  Much better than that over-the-counter pink stuff, that’s for sure!

The description above suggests that the ginger flavor here is light, and I agree … to a point.  The ginger is the dominant flavor in this blend – so in that context, I would say that the flavor of the ginger is strong – but, it isn’t an overwhelmingly potent or peppery ginger.  So, I guess I would say that the ginger is light yet prominent.

There is a spicy edge to the ginger, but, it is more of a gentle nudge than a swift kick, if you know what I mean.  And it has a very pleasant sweetness to it that is wonderful!

The flavor of the rooibos is not strong, I can taste a subtle nutty taste of the rooibos, but, it’s more of an afterthought than an assertive voice. But, since I’m not particularly fond of the flavor of rooibos, I like that the rooibos is not a forceful presence in this cup.

This is a tea would make a great treat for after a particularly large or spicy meal, because it does have stomach settling properties.  It also seems to instill a sense of calm.

A surprisingly delicious rooibos blend!

I’ll get straight to the point…I LOVE THIS FLAVORED OOLONG!  Strawberry Oolong from Butiki Teas is certainly a winner in my book!

It has the tiny pearls I have seen in some Cherry Blossom Green Teas – that I have tried in the past – and I think they are lovely and a nice touch to this Strawberry Flavored Oolong!

The aroma is excellent! The Oolong Leaves are screaming multiple infusions!   I did put this to the test and it holds up very well to multiple infusions!  This is also wonderful hot or cold!

The strawberry tastes are spectacular!  They are sweet without ANY trace of sour or bitterness. This is very sweet and very nice!

Tasters Review:

I decided to wind down my day with this flowering/blooming tea last night.

It smells like fresh peas and flowers!  I don’t know about you, but I LOVE the aroma of fresh from the garden peas!

This tastes delicate, slightly sweet but floral yet a different floral taste than I am used to or expect from a flowering or blooming tea.  I do like that it is a different floral taste, I might add!  It leaves a half floral – half fresh pea type aftertaste.

Lovely flowering tea! I think this is a goodie!  This tea is certainly for me!
