Latte Matcha from Teanobi

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Teanobi

Product Description:

This Matcha is specially blended for a Matcha Latte. This blend provides a smooth rich texture and deep green tea flavor to make a full bodied Latte, just add milk. This blend dissolves quicker than any of our other products for instant use. Can be used both steaming hot and iced.

Our Premium Latte Matcha is made with a higher grade of gyokuro leaves. This yields a finer texture and more delicate flavor. The aroma is sweeter and the flavor is less bitter than our standard matcha. Both are a delight to drink they just have a slightly different flavor profile.

This tea is made from Gyokuro grown exclusively in the Shizuoka region of Japan. There are no preservatives or additives of any kind. Imported directly from Japan to preserve peak freshness.

Taster’s Review:

The first time I prepared this, I did so using the package instructions:  1 cup of steamed milk to 1/4 tsp. Latte Matcha.  It was good, but, to be honest, I wanted the Matcha flavor to be a little stronger.  I felt like I was tasting too much milk.  So, the second time I prepared it, I used a little more Matcha (not quite 1/2 a tsp.) and this was perfect for me!

The flavor is so rich, creamy, and smooth.  Yes, it’s vegetative, but, that’s to be expected.  This IS Matcha!  It has a wonderfully mild sweetness.  There is no bitterness to this Matcha, which I found kind of odd, because I always expect a light bitterness in the background.  Perhaps its the milk that offsets the bitterness?  I don’t know.  Anyway, for those of you who often find Matcha to be too bitter for your personal taste, try it as a Latte using this Matcha!  I think you’ll be surprised at how good this one is!

I have blended this using my bamboo whisk (a chasen) and I have blended it using my handheld frother.  Both work just fine, although I prefer the handheld frother for the latte.  It becomes more frothy and creamy – just like a coffee shop green tea latte.  One big difference, though, is that this one hasn’t been sweetened, so you can decide if you want sweetener in it or not.

I really enjoyed this Matcha.  It’s not only great for making a Matcha Latte, but it also is quite nice in smoothies too.  Here’s my recipe:

  • 8 oz. of yogurt or Kefir (I prefer Kefir, coconut Kefir if you can find it!)
  • Banana
  • 1 cup (or more if you desire) of frozen fruit of your choice
  • 1/2 tsp of Latte Matcha (or more if you prefer)

Blend until creamy smooth.  Enjoy!

Now, I warn you, this smoothie will not have the most appetizing color.  But it is delicious, and it makes for a very satisfying (and healthy) meal replacement.

This is a great Matcha – at a great price!

Black Matcha from Pure Matcha

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:   Black

Where to Buy:  Pure Matcha

Product Description:

During the Song Dynasty in 11th century China, tea was consumed in powder form. Centuries later this innovative way of drinking black tea has been reinvented with our natural 100% Black tea powder or Black Matcha. Consumed just like traditional Green tea Matcha our Black Matcha is made from the finest Darjeeling and Assam tea leaves of India, and has a robust rich flavor. Higher in natural caffeine than a traditional cup of black tea, rivaling that of a cup of coffee. Except with Black Matcha there is no jittery crash. When you drink Black Matcha you get almost ten times more anti-oxidants and vitamins than a regular cup of tea, where the leaves are thrown away after brewing. Black Matcha is great for a healthy morning wake up.

Taster’s Review:

Now, I know what some of you Matcha purists out there are thinking… Matcha made from black tea leaves?  But don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

This is delicious.  It tastes like a very strongly brewed Assam/Darjeeling blend, heavy on the Assam.  It has a lot of GUSTO.  It has the maltiness that you would expect from a good quality Assam with a hint of muscatel in the background that is desirable from a Darjeeling.

There is a faint savory bitter note to this, but I’ve got to tell you that I really expected it to be very bitter in a not-savory-but-bad-bitter way.  This isn’t like that at all.  It does, however, have a fair amount of astringency to it.  It is robust with a well-rounded flavor.

It is very creamy and when that is combined with the biscuit-y quality of it and the malt – well, it becomes rather rich and decadent!  But, make no mistake, this is A STRONG TEA… so if you’re sensitive to caffeine, or even if you aren’t, you should be careful not to drink this too late in the day.  However, if you are one who finds yourself dragging a bit in the morning (um… that would be ME), this is the Matcha for you!

There is also a whisper of spice in the background that I am finding rather intriguing, and a very nice undertone of sweetness that I enhanced a little sprinkling of raw Turbinado sugar. A really delicious – and DIFFERENT! – Matcha!

It prepares just like “regular” green Matcha:  First, I sifted the dry tea (which looks a bit like dry hot chocolate mix).  The water was slightly hotter than I would with a green Matcha.  The water wasn’t boiling, but, it was just under a boil, whereas with green Matcha, I bring it to just about 145 degrees F.  Add the water and whisk, and this froths up just like a green Matcha!

I think this would also be quite nice as a latte, in fact, I think I shall have my next cuppa with steamed milk instead of water to see how that works out!   I will update in the comments when I try it!  In the meantime, you should try this tea!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Chai Matcha Latte from Matcha Mountains

Where to Buy:  Where Matcha Mountains Products are sold

Product Description:

Spice up your life this season with our chai matcha latte made from organic freshly ground spices cardamon, cinnamon, cloves… and japanese matcha. Accent our chai with a cinnamon stick or dollop of whip cream and enjoy hot or cold.

Taster’s Review:

THIS IS SO YUMMY!

This is a perfect Matcha Latte … and a perfect Chai Latte for that matter.  It is so good.

This is gently spiced – not something I would categorize as spicy.  More like warm and soothing.  It is sweet but not cloying.  It is smooth, rich and creamy.  The combination of adding steaming milk and the Matcha make for a very foamy, frothy beverage.

The Matcha base tastes vibrant.  It has a light vegetative taste.  It isn’t as vegetal as a typical Matcha.  Perhaps that is because it’s a latte mix, or perhaps it’s because the spices cancel out some of the grassy tones, or it could be because the milk offsets the vegetative qualities of the Matcha.  But if you’ve tried Matcha in the past and found that strong vegetative taste to be a little off-putting, try this!

I absolutely LOVE this Matcha Latte.  I love it so much, in fact, that my cup is empty!  I don’t usually finish off the cup before I finish writing the review… but, in this case, it tasted so good I couldn’t stop!  It’s a yummy treat!

PRODUCT REVIEW: Original Matcha Latte from Matcha Mountains

Where to Buy:  Where Matcha Mountains Products Are Sold.

Product Description:

Our original mix is ideal for getting you going in the morning or as an afternoon “pick me up”. Our original mix is for people who like the taste of green tea, although a few drops of vanilla extract or syrup is great. Simply mix with hot water and add your favourite frothed milk product. This product has the highest portion of matcha per serving and has a thick creamy texture.

Taster’s Review:

Yum!

I love Matcha and have been drinking it for years (although I will say that in the last year or two I have been drinking more than I had in the previous years), but I must admit that Matcha Latte drinks are a bit new to me, having only tried my first Matcha Latte in the last year or so.  But, since that time, I’ve been hooked!

This Matcha Latte mix has a sweetness to it, but it isn’t too sweet nor does it overwhelm the natural flavor of the green tea.  I can taste the distinct bittersweet taste of the Matcha, which I really enjoy.  This is incredibly creamy and energizing.

I love that this product is organic, and I also like that I can choose just how creamy I want this Matcha Latte to be by choosing my own milk – I can go with skim milk for less creaminess or I can really go for it and use half & half for an out of this world creamy experience.  Or if I prefer a non-dairy option, I can use almond milk or rice milk, or even coconut milk!

This is a versatile, delicious treat!   This product may be a little difficult to find since Matcha Mountains does not seem to sell it retail, however, it appears that it is sold in various Cafes and it is well worth the effort to find this latte mix because it’s outstanding!

Savanna Vanilla African Rooibos from Domo

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Rooibos

Where to Buy:  Domo

Product Description:

For hundreds of years the Khoisan people of South Africa have enjoyed rooibos tea, not just for its sweet, delicate taste but for its medicinal value. Now Domo has captured the spirit of the wild with a subtle blend of red rooibos and natural vanilla. Domo Flavour-Infused Rooibos is a whole new way to enjoy tea, and thanks to a high antioxidant count and no caffeine, it’s also one of the healthiest teas you can buy. Try Domo Vanilla-Enhanced Rooibos and rediscover the spirit of Africa.

Taster’s Review:

This is completely and utterly YUM!  Like dessert-treat yum!

This rooibos comes as a powder similar to green tea Matcha (only it is a reddish-terra-cotta color).  I prepared it the same way I would green tea Matcha except that I used hotter water (almost boiling) as rooibos tends to respond better to hotter water, but I used the same Matcha tools to prepare the Savanna Vanilla African Rooibos.

The result is a rich and creamy chawan full of sweet goodness!  But, be warned, this IS sweet.  And it tastes so creamy and vanilla-y that I almost feel like I should be eating it (like eating ice cream) rather than sipping on it.

The rooibos is not extraordinarily distinct in this – I can taste notes of nut and wood but not a lot of rooibos aftertaste (which is good!)  The dominate flavor is the vanilla – and it tastes like it was sweetened with vanilla sugar!  Yes, it is that sweet … if you don’t care for sweet drinks, this may not be the ideal beverage for you.  But for the rest of us – this is so deliciously decadent that it will help curb any sweet craving you might have!

I love this!

Tasters Review:

I held off on writing a review for this one for a while now because I wanted to have time to play with it before posting here on SororiTEA Sisters.

The first time I tried this…

ONE…I was overly eager to try it because…well…HELLO…it’s Chocolate!?  And TWO…the color of this is was much different that I expected!   It looks like a cloudy milk…I was thinking it would look like chocolate milk or something.  However, the taste was fairly mellow and very milky and had a slight cocoa taste at the end of the sip and on to the after taste.

The 2nd time I tried it I did what I like to call a DOUBLE SHOT.  And OH YEAH!  That made a difference!  I started with a little over 1 TBS and added 2 more…it’s more than suggested as they suggest 1-2 T but I figured I would try 3!

The color was still milky but with a cocoa and greenish tint to it. The smell is like milk with a hint of chocolate.

The taste is still quite gentle on the chocolate-side but VERY Creamy/Milky! This is very, very tasty!

I then went on to try this a 3rd time…

I added a splash of rice milk to it and it did make it a little more chocolate-like…moreso in the finish on to the aftertaste.

For my 4th attempt…I got overly crazy…but I thought…”What’s the worst that could happen.”

I used 8 tsps of this in about 6 or a little more ounces of water and I found Chocolate Matcha Bliss!

Moral of the story…experiment!  It’s FUN and with Matcha – is so diverse – by experimenting it will make just about anyone a Mad Matcha Scientist!

Chocolate Ecstasy Matcha from Domo is the perfect flavored Matcha to play around with!  Give it a try!  You’ll be glad you did!

Genmai Matcha from Shizuoka Tea

Tea Information:

Leaf Type:  Green

Where to Buy:  Shizuoka Tea

Product Description:

Genmai Matcha is a very tasty combination of Sencha, Genmai (toasted brown rice) and Matcha (high-quality tea leaf powder). The Genmai gives the Sencha tea a wholesome, nut-like flavor. The Matcha gives it a deep green color and very pleasing aroma.  This combination makes Genmai Matcha one of our best selling teas.

Taster’s Review:

I really enjoy Genmaicha teas, and I also enjoy Matcha, so when these two are brought together in one blend – well, you know that old commercial about two great tastes that taste great together?  Yeah, the commercial is about a candy bar, but it works here too.

I steeped this Genmai Matcha in my gaiwan.  I don’t usually steep Genmaicha in my gaiwan, but I don’t know why!  I think I may start though, because, I am finding it to be the perfect vessel for this tea.

The flavor is sweet, nutty and toasty.  There are hints of bitterness from the Matcha which enhance the overall profile of the tea – this tea seems to please the whole palate with its complex collection of flavors.

The Matcha coats the palate softly with a delicious, almost powder-like feel.  There is a pleasant level of vegetative taste to this cup.  It doesn’t taste too grassy.  The toasted taste of the Genmaicha gives the cup a more “roasted vegetable” flavor rather than a grassy tone.

This is a very energizing cup, it is a great choice to sip later in the day to help offset that sluggish sort of feeling!  It not only excites the palate but invigorates the body and helps to clear the mind!  What a splendid tea!
